Loudness Wars

Just as editing is a crucial part of the writing process, so is mixing and mastering to music. I don’t much enjoy editing although once you get into it, you can’t stop the weeding and the tweaking as you try to clear the channel for the good energy of the words to flow. I find mixing in music much more enjoyable, again clearing the paths so the energy of the notes can flow and work together. Once the mix is done, you have to master the thing. I try to use as little compression as possible in order to retain the dynamic range of the mix. If you want to listen in BLOCK CAPITALS, turn it up but there’s no reason I should make it loud for loud’s sake. Here’s a remix I just did for fun. It came together quickly and I like the dissonances that enhance the harmonic structures.
